Expertise

I think along before I design. I ask before I answer. And I say so when something isn't needed.

01

Brand & Design

Where are a brand's strengths, where are its blind spots? Identity doesn't come from standing apart, it comes from character — visible inside and out, for the head and the heart of the people it exists for.

  • Brand strategy & positioning
  • Logo & corporate design
  • Brand redesign
  • Colour systems
  • Typographic systems
  • Image style & picture pool
  • Packaging
  • Guidelines & brand books
  • Keynote & presentation templates
  • Naming & tone of voice (with partners)
02

Graphic & Communication

Design is the visible character of an idea — on the poster, in the feed, in the annual report. From concept through layout to artwork and print supervision. And in digital, through to the finished build.

  • Editorial design & magazines
  • Posters & key visuals
  • Illustration & iconography
  • Infographics
  • Stationery
  • Social media systems & templates
  • Campaigns & advertising
  • Web concept, UI & UX
  • Websites & shops — design and build
  • Artwork & print supervision
03

Space — Arch & Interior

In space a brand becomes physical: on the stand, in the shop, on the festival site. I plan spatially, think modularly so installations can change and be reused, and keep the photography in mind from the start.

  • Spatial design & brand environments
  • Trade fairs & events
  • Shop, showroom & pop-up
  • Installations & scenography
  • Wayfinding systems
  • Interior concepts
  • Material & furniture selection
  • Photographic documentation
04

Photography

I have been photographing for many years — architecture, product, editorial, documentation. Often the photograph is the point where a brand first looks honest.

Process

01
Listen

Before I show anything I want to understand the goal, the people, the context, the budget. Including what isn't said.

02
Order

What already exists? What is relevant? I curate before I design — that saves noise and time.

03
Connect

Strategy, design and space as one system. Modular, so it holds when something changes — and something always changes.

04
Hand over

Guidelines, templates, source files, a conversation with the team. The aim is that it carries on without me.

Alongside that: my own brand at a market stall, a curated store with ten objects, and a festival on the Indian Ocean. Awards: German Design Award, Berlinale EFM, London Lift-Off. I learned most of it at the stall, not at the desk.

  • Markenstrategie & Positionierung
  • Logo & Corporate Design
  • Brand Redesign
  • Farbweltkonzept
  • Typografiekonzept
  • Bildstil & Bildpool
  • Packaging
  • Guidelines & Brand Books
  • Keynote- & Präsentationsvorlagen
  • Naming & Tonalität (mit Partnern)
02

Grafik & Kommunikation

  • Editorial Design & Magazine
  • Plakat & Key Visual
  • Illustration & Ikonografie
  • Infografik
  • Geschäftsausstattung
  • Social-Media-Systeme & Templates
  • Kampagnen & Anzeigen
  • Web-Konzeption, UI & UX
  • Websites & Shops — Design und Build
  • Reinzeichnung & Druckbetreuung
03

Raum — Arch & Interior

  • Messe- & Eventauftritte
  • Shop, Showroom & Pop-up
  • Installationen & Szenografie
  • Leit- & Orientierungssysteme
  • Interior-Konzepte
  • Material- & Möbelauswahl
  • Fotografische Dokumentation
04

Fotografie

Prozess

01
Zuhören

Bevor ich etwas zeige, will ich verstehen: Ziel, Menschen, Kontext, Budget. Auch das, was nicht gesagt wird.

02
Ordnen

Was existiert schon? Was ist relevant?

Auszeichnungen: German Design Award, Berlinale EFM, London Lift-Off.

Oliver FreiländerDesign & CommunicationBased in Berlin, working worldwide

Oliver Freiländer is a Designer. He lives and works in Berlin — and from there, anywhere.

I work at the intersection of design, communication, and the spaces where ideas turn into real things. My approach isn't to chase what's new — it's to understand what already exists, and find the right way to connect it.

There is an almost infinite archive of ideas and objects around us. I'm not interested in adding more noise. I'm interested in ordering it: curating, rethinking, and giving form to whatever is actually relevant. I learned early that reinventing yourself isn't a crisis. It's necessary.

I think about circular economies, modular design systems, and the slow erosion of comfort zones. About how much craft counts in a world that often rewards the superficially perfect. And about the fact that real connection — between people, between disciplines, between a brand and the people it exists for — is still the most sustainable thing you can build.

I have also been photographing for many years.

01 — On the work

I make things, question things, and connect people to ideas that actually matter.

There's a trap worth naming: letting what you do become who you are. The work matters — but it shouldn't colonise the person doing it. I try to hold that distinction. Not always successfully. But deliberately.

Curious about craft. Committed to people. Somewhere in between, always.

There's no such thing as newness — only what's waiting to be reorganised and given meaning.

02 — Design

We midground between AI and reality — and that's exactly where something real can still be felt.

The way we think about design is changing, and I find that genuinely exciting. Not everything needs to be new. In fact there is no such thing as pure newness. We are surrounded by an almost infinite archive of ideas, forms, images and materials. The practice is learning to listen to that material, organise it, and give it new purpose. Repurposing is not laziness. It's one of the most honest forms of creativity.

I'm drawn to the space between what algorithms generate and what a human hand leaves behind. That friction, that warmth, that trace of a decision — that's where I want to work. Design should feel like it was made by someone who meant it.

I think in systems. Not because systems are tidy — they rarely are — but because modular thinking makes problem-solving transferable. Build the frame well and it holds many different conversations.

03 — People

Treat your people well. There is a seat at the table for everyone.

It sounds simple because it is. And yet it remains the exception far more often than it should be.

A seat at the table for everyone — not as a slogan, but as a working principle. The table gets better the more diverse the voices around it. Confidence is built, not given. Craftsmanship is kept alive through use. And real connection — social, human, unhurried — is still the most underrated material in any creative process.

Working across disciplines — political communication, brand identity, spatial thinking — has taught me to ask better questions before offering any answers. And to step outside my comfort zone often enough that it stops being uncomfortable.

04 — Change

Reinvention is not disruption — it is a responsibility.

From a young age I understood: you have to reinvent yourself from time to time. Not out of restlessness — out of respect for who you might still become. This feels especially true right now.

We change. Our contexts change. The work we're asked to do changes. The discipline is in adapting thoughtfully: setting boundaries within structures, staying grounded while staying open. A circular approach to how we make things is part of that — less extraction, more consideration, ideas and materials that can return and begin again.

I hold these

  1. Clarity in communication is a form of respect.
  2. Design is not decoration — it is the visible character of an idea.
  3. Circularity matters: in materials, in thinking, in relationships.
  4. Confidence is built by doing difficult things carefully.
  5. Reinvention is not disruption — it is a responsibility.
  6. The best work happens when people feel they can be honest.
  7. Craftsmanship is worth protecting. In any medium.

I make things, question things, and connect people to ideas that actually matter.

02 — Design

We midground between AI and reality — and that's exactly where something real can still be felt.

03 — Menschen

Treat your people well. There is a seat at the table for everyone.

04 — Wandel

Reinvention is not disruption — it is a responsibility.

  3. Zirkularität zählt: im Material, im Denken, in Beziehungen.
  4. Selbstvertrauen entsteht, indem man schwierige Dinge sorgfältig tut.
  7. Handwerk ist es wert, geschützt zu werden. In jedem Medium.
